About the Roswell New Horizons Band
The Roswell New Horizons Band has five musical groups, ranging from large to small, playing a different musical style. There is a Roswell New Horizons musical group to accommodate various venue sizes, from large to small. Organizations that plan regular monthly or quarterly events can present each of these Roswell New Horizons musical styles during the year so their audiences can enjoy a new and different experience each time. Programs can run from 45 min to a couple hours, depending upon the band and the event. The musical groups are the following:
- A Pops band that plays medleys of Broadway and jazz tunes, classical pieces and marches. Around 40 musicians play at performances. This is a big sound for large venues.
- The Jazz bands (RED and BLUE) are jazz/swing bands that play a wide range of music from Count Basie to Michael Buble to Buddy Rich. 16 musicians and a vocalist play at performances.
- The Riverboat Jazz Band is dedicated to the preservation and performance of American Dixieland music. Seven band members play at performances.
- The Dogwood Brass Quintet, a 5 piece brass ensemble, plays a mixture of classical and popular melodies.
The Band is a non-profit organization, and the players receive no remuneration. However, because the Band does have certain expenses, such as rent for its practice hall, music director compensation and the purchase of music, the Band does request a contribution for its performances. The amount of the contribution varies from situation to situation, but is always a small percentage of the amount charged by comparable commercial bands.
The Pops and RED Jazz bands rehearse each Thursday at the Roswell Adult Recreation Center located at 830 Grimes Bridge Road, Roswell, GA 30075. The BLUE Jazz band rehearses each Friday morning at the same location. Map
